Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang is a story about a boy who is running away from a bully. He accidentally runs into a lake and is saved by the ghost of a girl who lives under the water. In spite of his fear of the girl’s skeleton-like appearance, the boy realizes that she is kind and becomes friends with her. However, when they become friends, the secret of the girl begins to unfold.

A really effective graduation short faces the sensitive territory of abuse and bullying, with a very precise and coherent art direction and its strong visual choices, juxtaposes its essential atmosphere with a strong and difficult topic.

Good animation but too much of it. Story drags. As I tell my students, "if you are going to have someone go to the store don't animate them walking every step." Could use with a good edit down to 25% of its current length.

It starts out as an innocent story of a school bully, but quickly becomes intense both in story and visual style. Suspenseful with great timing, animation and artistic choices

From the beginning to the end, as a viewer you're fully engaged to the story and emotionally invested to the characters. The choice of art direction was perfect to support this kind of story. The use of simple and rough lines are animated in a very creative way, supporting the poetic yet intense narrative. The high quality and the use of music, animation and performances were all very strong. Overall all elements were supporting the narrative flow to bring a solid short film.

Strong and sad story but powerful, love the backgrounds. A drama that expresses an anguish very deep inside and anger. Maybe it makes me remind of the ghost of Paranorman.
